PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries function. It is characterised by hormonal imbalances, particularly involving androgens, which can interfere with ovulation and may lead to fertility difficulties. 

PCOS is a long term condition with no known cure, and its exact cause is not fully understood. (NHS)

Symptoms vary between individuals and may change over time. Common symptoms include (NHS):

 

  • Irregular or absent periods

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Oily skin or acne

  • Excessive hair growth on the face or body (hirsutism)

  • Thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp

  • Low mood or depression

Did you know?

1 in 8 women in the UK are affected  PCOS (Verity PCOS)

Between 6-13% of women worldwide are estimated to have PCOS, with up to 70% remaining undiagnosed (WHO).

You should consider speaking to a GP or healthcare professional if (NHS):

  • Your periods are irregular or stop completely

  • You experience symptoms of excess hair growth or hair thinning

  • You struggle with acne that does not improve

  • You have concerns about fertility or hormone-related symptoms
